6. ain't 不, 否定
A: You ain't gonna fool nobody, man. I don't buy a word you said.
A: 老兄, 你骗不了人的。 我才不信你所说的哩。
B: I'm serious.
B: 我说真的!
基本上, ain't (= am not, are not, is not)不是个你想用的字。因为通常没有受高等教育的人比较会用这个字。就像例句里的 "ain't .....nobody"的双重否定是一样不正确的'英文的。可以看一看, 但应避免在正式场合里用它。
gonna 其实是 going to 的意思。美国人在口语中多半都用 gonna。类似的用法还有 wanna (= want to)
buy 除了「买」以外, 还有「相信」、 「贿赂」的意思。
7. talk someone out of... 劝服人放弃..
A: I'm going to try talking Carl out of his foolish plan.
A: 我想说服 Seth 放弃他那愚蠢的计画。
B: You can try, but he is very hard headed.
B: 你可以试试看, 不过他很固执就是了。
"hard headed" 是形容人头壳很硬, 不随便改变主意的意思。
"talk someone into something" 则和 "talk someone out of something" 刚好相反。如: The salesman talked him into buying a new car. 那个销售员说服他买新车子。
8. Take it easy. 别紧张
A: Oh, no.We're going to miss the flight.
A: 唉, 糟糕了. 我们赶不上飞机了。
B: Take it easy, we still have three hours to get to the airport.
B: 别紧张。我们还有三个小时可以去机场。
注意这里的去到机场的动词用的是"get" (到达), 而不是中文语法习惯用的"go" (去)。当你想请问别人如何去某地时, 就应该用"get", 而不是"go"。例如: "Excuse me. Can you tell me how to get to the nearest ATM?" (请问, 最近的自动提款机在哪里?)
9. No ifs, ands, or buts 少啰嗦
A: Johnny, turn the TV off and go do your homework.
A: Johnny, 把电视关了然后去做功课。
B: But, Mom...
B: 但是, 妈妈 ...
A: Just do as I say. No ifs, ands, or buts!
A: 照着我说的去作,不要啰嗦!
B: Yes, Mommy
B: 是的, 妈妈 ...
这里的 "go do your homework" 原本是 "go and do your homework"。但口语中常把 "and" 省略, 而说成 go do (take, see etc.)....
10. around 大约, 左右
A: So, Steve never made it last night?
A: 结果, Steve 昨天晚上根本没来吗?
B: He did, actually. He finally showed up around 9:30 last night.
B: 有! 但他差不多到晚上九点半才出现。
make it" (过去式made it) 是一个很好用的词组, 有「做到」、「完成」的意思。好比你原本答应朋友要在周末到他家吃饭, 临时计画有变, 去不成了。可以告诉他"Sorry, I can't make it this weekend. My father is visiting us." (抱歉, 我这 个周末去不成了。我父亲要来探望我们。) around 是「大约」,「左右」的意思。比 about 更常用。"get around to" 是 「找出时间做..」的意思。我曾经有一个室友从来不肯洗碗的, 老是等我帮他 洗。有时, 我受不了了, 就问他"Are you ever going to do your own dishes?" (你 什么时候才终于会洗自己的碗呢?) "I will, whenever I get around to it." (我会! 等我有时间就会!), 他总是这样告诉我。get around to 后面要加动名词。这里 的 get around to it 是 get around to washing them 的意思。
