English-Chinese Translation of Song Lyrics
Abstract
It is well known that as a special branch of translation studies, the controversy about song lyrics translation has been lasted for many years. The translatability of the song lyrics has also been a controversial question among translators and musicians. However, since the early nineteenth century, a lot of English songs have been introduced into China and spread widely due to the well-translated Chinese versions of the lyrics. The spread of so many popular Chinese-version English songs illuminates the facts that lyric is translatable. The present thesis is an attempt to conduct a theoretical study of musical restrictions and lyrics shifts on rendition of song lyrics. Through the methods the translators have adopted in their works, the thesis aims at generalizing some principles for future theoretical references. The concept of “FE” (Functional Equivalence) proposed by Nida focuses on the readers’ responses (Nida 116), and could be of value to our illustrative analysis.

摘 要
众所周知,作为翻译研究的1个特殊领域,歌词翻译引发的争论由来已久。歌词是否可译更是成为许多翻译家争论的焦点。但是,从109世纪初至今,许多好听的外国歌曲已经在我国广为流传,这些都应该归功于优秀的歌词翻译。同时也说明了歌词的可译性。本文研究歌词的英汉翻译,旨在从功能等值的角度研究由于音乐制约而导致歌词在翻译过程中的转化。通过分析歌词翻译在具体翻译过程中所采取的1系列翻译策略,概括出歌词翻译的1些普遍规律,为我国歌词翻译实践提供相应的理论指导。奈达提出的功能等值理论尤为关注“读者”(受众)反应,对本文理论探索和例证分析大有帮助。
