College Job Interview Questions

When you are a college student or recent graduate, it's important to relate your college education, extracurricular activities, and experiences to the job for which you are applying.

Here are sample questions you might be asked during an entry level job interview and sample answers. Do take the time to personalize your responses and connect them to your specific experience and qualifications.

Please tell me how you can apply the course work you took in college to a position at our company?

During my tenure at college, I took a wide range of course that helped to broaden my perspective. My school required students to take course in the humanities, diversity centered/non-western, the natural sciences, writing and other disciplines.

This spectrum of classes has allowed me to gain a firm understanding of alternative models of thinking and I will be able to transfer this mindset to my professional career as well. As companies globalize, it is significant to not only be an expert in your own field, but also be savvy with other ways as well to bring a new perspectives to the table.

What extracurricular activities have you participated in during college, and how did they help prepare you for the position you are applying for?

At college, I was a Resident Assistant for two semesters and held a leadership position on SGA and a student club. As an RA I was responsible for the care and co-management of a building of 200 plus students. I gained valuable skills in planning events, being the leader of a floor and working as a team to effectively manage resident issues.

In my leadership roles on SGA and student clubs, I learned a lot about myself. I developed a passion for being an agent of change. It helped me to be able to gain a firmer understanding of my own strengths and weaknesses and grow personally and professionally.

During college, did you complete an internship? If so, tell us about the experience and what you learned from it.

During the summer of my junior year, I interned for the National Museum Society in New York City. I was responsible for doing digital media to promote the organizations events and members as well as administrative support for the staff.

My internship provided me a good sense of what it is like in the professional world. I followed the offices dress attire, worked on the same schedule as other employees and participated in outside of office events as well. Though it was only a small staff, I gained valuable insight on the everyday rhythm of a professional organization and realized how I can apply what I learn in college to the workforce. It was a great opportunity to develop myself professionally.

What unique attributes can you bring to this company and position?

My best attribute is passion. Without a passion for what you are doing, it is not possible to ideally perform your job. I have a desire to help others and develop as a professional. This desire will be the driving force behind my work efforts that directly translate into a knowledgeable, detail oriented, responsible employee with a desire for success. I have always learned if I am going to do something, I should put my greatest effort into it.

You have mentioned a lot of positive attribute about yourself, now please tell me about a weakness you have and how you plan to combat that if hired.

One of my greatest strengths and weakness is my passion for what I am doing. For example, while in college, I have a variety of courses at the same time and have more of an interest in one than the other. I sometimes catch myself paying more attention to one over the other which is apparent in the end results.

While it is great that I am so zealous about particular projects, I need to learn how to find that niche in projects that are not as appealing as well. If employed, I will combat this by realizing that all of my assignments, regardless how into them I may be, are all part of a larger goal. All of them help me grow professionally and contribute to the progress of a particular project and the company. Keeping this in mind, I will be able to turn this weakness into a positive.

Typically we talk about what supervisors expect from employees, but what do you expect from a supervisor?

I like a work environment where supervisors make personal connections with their employees. I would like to be able to go to the leadership of the company if I have an issue or idea and feel comfortable to express them. I would also expect them to realize their positions, and if I am getting "out of line" be sure to speak with me about it. So, for me, open communcations between employees and management are ery important.
