Last summer vacation, Tom took a part-time job in a company.His office was very small at the end of the second floor.One Friday evening, he finished his work and went out of his office.It’s already six o’clock.He looked around and found everybody had gone home.The building was very quiet, and the main lights were all out.He ran down to see whether he could find somebody, but it was too late.The doors all locked, and he was locked in the building.Tom went back to his office to phone the doorkeeper, but the phone did not work.He tried another one, and that phone did not work, either.Tom realized the phones in the office had been locked for the weekend.He thought, “I had to be here for the weekend”.Suddenly he remembered that in the reception room there was a phone that was always on.So he rushed to the reception room.The door was locked, too.So he went into the room through the window, and phoned the doorkeeper.Half an hour later, the doorkeeper came, and Tome went home.

Uncle John Was Saved
When Uncle John was 85 years old, most of his families and relatives were already dead.He lived by himself in a big house.The only person who often talked to him was his nephew Tom.Tom called several times a week just for few minutes to say hello and see if everything was OK.
One morning Tom phoned Uncle John again.Again no answer.Two hours later he called the 3rd time.Still no answer, he got very anxious.So he called Uncle John’s next door neighbor.Tom told her that he was worried about Uncle John and asked her to see what was wrong.A while later, the neighbor phoned Tom.She said nervously, “Tom, I’m sorry it took so long.Uncle John didn’t answer the door, so I used his spare key.I found him lying on the bathroom floor.I could not wake him up.” Tom called the doctor immediately, and then rushed to Uncle John’s house.When he got there, the doctor had already been there.The doctor said that he was just in time to save him.

听力测试在高考英语试题中占有五分之一的比重。要提高听力,在高考中出彩,掌握有效的应试技巧是十分重要的。
一、试题形式
目前高考及其他中学阶段各种考试采用的听力测试题型主要为三种:短对话、短篇以及长对话。答题形式有两种:多项选择题(Multiple Choice)和填空题(Spot Dictation)。其中填空题有的空格要求考生听懂长对话内容,填其“意义”而不是细节性的具体单词。
短对话只听1遍;其他两大题,各听2遍,耗时约20—30分钟。
二、应试技巧
★听短对话。考生在处理广播调试声音后,即可“扫描”短对话中的选项。据此展望第1个短对话可能出现的话题。
假如考生看到的是:
A.On March 2
B.On March 3
C.On March 5
D.On March 8
则考生可以判断,第1题话题涉及3月的某一天;考生一听见录音第1题及问句,由于已有所知悉,立刻可做出正确选择。
不要等到第一题念毕,问句提出后再去看四个选项。一般两道听力题(短对话)之间相隔6秒。如早早完成,即可提前思考第2题。
又如题干较长的题目:
A.They’d better not go riding.
B.Riding a bike is a great idea.
C.It’s not good riding in the rain.
D.They can go riding half an hour later.
考生在“扫描”时,预先知道该题涉及骑自行车;其中可能涉及骑车的时间,也可能是涉及一次具体的骑车活动。
这种“超前”浏览选项的本领可以培养,有的考生可以提前“扫描”3~5题,并保留一定印象。
[注] 听短对话时切忌走神。万一走神,比如说第4题没听清楚,你的本能反应是想再听,想回忆——但根本不可能,所以此刻只好猜题。猜题还有1/4的希望;反思的话,不巧把第5题也给漏掉!
★听短文。听短文时要学会“记要”(taking notes)。记要有两类,一是用符号记下关键信息(如数量大小、时间顺序等);一是用具体文字记。这是因为短文耗时长,有人会“前听后忘记”。另外一个决窍是“超前”浏览短篇的选项。如:
A.Why a company lost its customers.
B.Why a company went out of business.
C.How a company went from bad to worse.
D.How a company got out of its difficult situation.
考生一扫描就意识到该题指全文中心思想,并立即分辨出问题要么问理由(针对why), 要么讲过程(针对how)。
★听长对话。听长对话也应该有个“超前”扫描,先对对话话题有个印象。在对话进行时要注意“细节”(detail)和“关键词” (key words),必要时也得作“记要”:用铅笔,在试卷边(test paper margin)记一下。Taking notes的技巧可以从《高中英语(新世纪版)》高三年级的课本中去找。
三、训练方法
听力水平的提高有两种方法:
(一)不断地“听”模拟试题。隔天一听,每周两听,等等。从当年9月起听到次年5月;用过的试卷达40~50套。这种应试训练要注意:
1.每次训练宜一气呵成。高考听力是一气呵成,中间无间歇的。
2.每次训练要尝试“超前”技巧。
3.听完,对好答案,要反思,查一查自己丢分的道理,查一查自己的“软肋”。
(二)抓基本功。选择材料,学习听取“意群”(sense group),听“连读”(liaison),听“重读”(stressed words)以及“略读”(reduction)。为什么?因为目前高考听力并不采用“真实语言材料”(authentic material)。在真实生活中的对话,处处用到上述4种口语“技巧”。一般速度快,句子短或者不完整。所以从长远看,要真正提高听力水平,应从基本功开始,在迎接高考之初,第二种准备方法为时不晚,关键是勤奋。
四、材料信息
关于听力模拟试卷,建议选用专业出版社的产品,如上海外语教育出版社。
关于听力基本功训练,建议选用《英语(新世纪版)听力》(上海外语教育出版社)。该书1~3册,每单元后都有Mechanic Skills的专项训练,附有“意群”、“连读”、“重读”及“略读”的实例。
另外,如考生有条件,进口教材中有许多精彩的听力训练材料可选用,如:Longman出版的Impact Listening 1~3,配有CD。 至于书市上流行的VOA, BBC及CNN的各种CD,可以选用一些,但必须由老师精选。
听力材料话题一定要广泛,话题要符合《课程标准》中提及的项目。
五、注意事项
生词的拼写及朗读也应同步展开。单词读音不准,听力的准确性受损;单词的拼写不准,即便听懂了的也写不出来。
