Captain Cook Arrow Legend
It was a great legend while it lasted, but DNA testing has (1)ended a two-century-old story of the Hawaiian arrow carved from the bone of British explorer Captain James Cook (2)died in the Sandwich Islands in 1779.
“There is (3)Cook in the Australian Museum,” museum collection manager Jude Philips said not long ago in announcing the DNA evidence that the arrow was not made of Cooks bone. But that will not stop the museum from continuing to display the arrow in its (4), “Uncovered: Treasures of the Australian Museum,” (5)include a feather cape presented to Cook by Hawaiian King Kalaniopuu in 1778.
Cook was one of Britains great explorers and is credited with (6)the “Great Southland,” (7)Australia, in 1770. He was clubbed to death in the Sandwich Islands, now Hawaii.
The legend of Cooks arrow began in 1824 (8)Hawaiian King Kamehameha on his deathbed gave the arrow to William Adams, a London surgeon and relative of Cooks wife, saying it was made of Cooks bone after the fatal (9)with islanders.
In the 1890s the arrow was given to the Australian Museum and the legend continued (10)it came face-to-face with science.
DNA testing by laboratories in Australia and New Zealand revealed the arrow was not made of Cooks bone but was more (11)made of animal bone, said Philips.
However, Cooks fans (12)to give up hope that one Cook legend will prove true and that part of his remains will still be uncovered, as they say there is evidence not all of Cooks body was (13)at sea in 1779. “On this occasion technology has won,” said Cliff Thornton, president of the Captain Cook Society, in a (14)from Britain. “But I am (15)that one of these days one of the Cook legends will prove to be true and it will happen one day.”
答案:a(finally)
答案:b(who)
答案:d(no)
答案:b(exhibition)
解析:博物馆中不会把珍贵的 “arrow” 陈列在 shop(商店)、market(市场)或 cinema(电影院),exhibition(展览)是最合适的答案。
答案:d(does)
答案:a(discovering)
解析:be credited with 的意思是 “把…… Visiting(访问)、travelling(旅行)和 using(使用)与 be credited with 所表达的意思都不搭配。
答案:b(now)
Then(当时)、past(过去的)或 previously(以前)意思与上下文表达的意思不连贯。
答案:c(when)
答案:b(fight)
解析:第三段提到 Cook 是被乱棍打死的(he was clubbed to death),所以选择 fight(战斗、打架)是很自然的。
答案:b(until)
为止”,所以合适的选择是 until(直到……)。
答案:c(likely)
答案:a(refuse)
refuse to do sth.
答案:d(buried)
答案:a(statement)
答案:c(sure)
