How to Bear a Job That You Hate
Hate to get up in the morning because you know where you have to
go? There aren't many people out there who are working in their
dream careers. Most hate what they do for a living and can barely
tolerate the people around them. Here's what you do when you can't
just quit.
Steps
- Look for another job. Even if you are obligated to your current
job for a period of time, it is empowering to know what other
opportunities are available to you. Make plans for the future. Look
forward to the day when you are able to free yourself from the
abysmal existence that is your current situation.
- On that same note, remember that your current job isn't
permanent. The average person goes through 5 careers in their
lifetime. Some of those jobs only last 3 years. Give it time.
- Do a bang up job. Be the all time best employee that your
backward company has ever seen. Don't let the company's failures be
your own. Make a great mark. Accomplishments always look good on a
resume.
- Keep your Sense of Humor. Having time to laugh can make even
the most unbearable jobs tolerable. Bring a Joke book to work or
find humorous points of view when you're doing you're job. Plus,
Studies have shown that laughing is good for your health. Being
Optimistic can keep the ball rolling in your favor.
- Occupy your free time with rewarding activities. Where your
work fails you, fill in the blanks. Set a goal to build strength
and stamina and start a rigorous workout routine, volunteer at a
children's hospital, or learn to play an instrument. If you are
distracted in your free time you won't be thinking about how much
your job sucks. If you work for 8 hours a day; that means you have
8 hours to sleep and 8 hours to yourself. Keep it that way.
- Share bad work experiences with family and friends. Some events
that seem agitating and stressful at the time may actually turn out
to be amusing once relayed to a trusted friend. It can be cathartic

important to remember that someone will always have it worse than
you so be thankful for what you have when you read some of the

- Try to make a friend at work, even if you think you have
nothing in common with the people around you. An awful job is much

any) to select an optimal working situation in your next job.
Carefully interview prospective employers to assure that you don't
lock yourself into another horrible job.
- Negotiate more than adequate compensation. Even bad jobs are
tolerable when you're paid!
- Be more considerate to the people who irritate you most and see
if you can make friends with them. Once you've gone that extra mile
and made the effort to befriend the source of your irritation,
you'll probably see the situation improve, if it doesn't, you
probably really DO need a new job!
- Seek professional help. More than 19 million Americans suffer
from depression. A lot of it is work-related. Some companies offer
Employee Assistance Programs (EAP), which have counselors available
to help you through tough times. If your work doesn't offer EAP,
see if your health insurance does and get some help.
- You also have the option of quitting the job if you truly
resent it.

- It is easy to be distracted in a job that you don't like. You
might create Wiki articles for instance. Don't fall into this trap.
Be sure to complete all your tasks. Anything that leaves your desk
should be held to impeccable standards.
- Don't let anyone at your job know that you hate it. Smile and
be cordial. You don't want to end up fired from a job that you
didn't even want in the first place.
